[appearance] Unlike her sisters, Andromeda was never blessed with outstanding looks. She has, of course, the natural beauty granted to all Blacks by birth. However, instead of dark and stunning like Bellatrix, or pure and bright like Narcissa, Andromeda has a plain sort of beauty. She has long brown hair that curls just a little bit every now and again, usually when she lets it dry without a charm. She has hazel eyes, neither more brown or more green. All in all, Andromeda's appearance can really be described as mediocre. She's got a well shaped-body, with quite a few curves. Andromeda has long limbs, which gives her the appearance of height, even though she's only about five and a half feet tall. Although since Nymphadora's birth she's having a bit of a hard time losing the baby-weight. She can't quite find time to exercise. Although within a few years chasing Nymphy around will be sufficient exercise to get rid of the pudge left over from pregnancy.

Her clothes are a mix of muggle and wizarding. She has found, lately, with the appearance of her toddling daughter, that muggle jeans and blouses are more convenient. She prefers bellbottoms, as is the trend, and peasant blouses. Although the peasant blouses are a common enough article in the Wizarding World as well. Some of the elder witches, mostly those with gypsy lineage, wear peasant blouses with corsets beneath their robes. Andromeda just prefers regular jeans, a flowing peasant blouse (until Nymphy was born she went bra-less, but she can't do that anymore) and to run barefoot. But Andromeda was raised to be a proper witch and knows when to wear robes out and about in the world. And despite the fact that she doesn't pay much attention to it, Andromeda has an inborn innate sense of style. She knows what to wear and how to wear it to flatter her form. That isn't to say, of course, that Andromeda is naturally stunning and beautiful, but she knows how to appear that way. When she's required to dress up, or in a particularly good mood, or trying to surprise her husband, Andromeda stands out just as much as her sisters do. Andromeda can look every bit as lovely and beautiful as the other Black women. At least, when she's not covered in whatever Nymphy has decided to throw at her, or wipe on her. That, of course, is why Andromeda spends most of her time in muggle-clothes.

[personality] Despite her proper background and raising, Andromeda developed her own personality, one completely separate from her family. She learned how to act and think from novels. She became her own person, one who disagreed with the elitist ideas of family. And that was just the first tiny step that started to create Andromeda's personality. She could, quite easily, be described as a hippie. Andromeda is all about equality and free-love. Not necessarily the sexual kind of love, of course. But Andromeda has a warm and inviting personality. She's always cheerful, even when feeling just a bit weighed down by what life throws upon her. She loves to laugh, and has the soft tinkling kind of laughter that squints her eyes in the corner. She knows she's going to have wrinkles by the time she's thirty and doesn't care. She's a happy person and life is pleasant in her eyes. Stressful, but anything can be done with a little bit of perseverance and a good attitude. And Andromeda has an abundance of those (the perseverance and determination are probably what, along with her blood lineage, got her placed in Slytherin).

Don't let the smiles and giggles fool you, though. Andromeda has a serious side. She has, firstly, a side that is chock full of obsessive compulsive disorder. You can't come out of the Black family tree completely unscarred, after all. She is an excessive neat-freak. And with out house-elves, she has to do all the cleaning herself, which is suddenly a million times harder than she anticipated thanks to her toddling tornado. She's also very picky about the books in her library (small as it is) and they must be categorized and alphabetized. She doesn't get angry when her house is a mess or when her books are out of order, though. She's as cheerful and good-natured as ever, even though it drive her mad until she can clear or organize. But she is a fierce fighter when she needs to be. She grew up in the shadow of Bellatrix and they had their share of spats. Andromeda prefers to be a healer for the Order, but if the call comes to fight, she has no reserves about it. Andromeda believes strongly in the cause of justice and equality and hopes that it will end before her family ends up dead because of it. Because even though they've nearly all disowned her, Andromeda still loves her family. Love the sinner, hate the sin is a rather good motto in Andromeda's mind.

[history] Andromeda came screaming into the world, a rolling ball of pink flesh and curly brown hair, on May 1st of 1953. She was ushered immediately into a world of glamour and high-society. Andromeda was spoiled from the moment of her birth, given everything she ever wanted. She clashed immediately with her sisters, as sisters will do. But it really wasn't much more than that initially. Andromeda was different than her sisters, but only in the regard that she was more bubbly and sociable. As a toddler Andi was always smiling. She liked to read, and dance, and sing, and play. She was a cheerful little girl who dreamed of fairy tales and happy endings. And for the first few years of her life, Andromeda was completely sheltered from the realities of her world. She had no idea what kind of darkness lay in the outside world.

Growing up, Andi spent a lot of time reading. On lazy days when her sisters were busy with other things or each other, when they didn't have lessons, Andromeda could be found in one of the backyard swings with her nose tucked into a good book. She read the classics (some of which were muggle and had been lost in the libraries and not bothered with) and some newer stuff. The stories that stood out the strongest in her mind were the ones about freedom and equality. Thus, Andromeda began to understand what kind of injustice there was in the world. And when she was eleven, sorted into Slytherin, and surrounded by those who were supposed to be her "peers" and "equals", she started to understand what kind of injustice there was in her world. And by second year she started stepping out a bit. The little arguments she had with Bellatrix and Narcissa turned into fullblown fights. She still loved her sisters, of course, but that didn't mean she agreed with them or with their ideas. She was quickly starting to understand that she was nothing like the rest of her family.

Except, perhaps, Sirius. When Sirius was born, Andromeda took an immediate liking to him. She decided to do all she could to bring him to her way of thinking. She tried to teach him what she'd learned in books. And when he was placed in Gryffindor, she was never more happy. Andromeda herself had been a Slytherin, but she never really felt like one. Andi focused on her studies, and focused on fighting against prejudices. She knew from an early age what she wanted to be, and knew that she would have to study hard to achieve her goal. She didn't get top marks, but she was certainly above average in her studies. Perhaps if she'd paid more attention to her studies and less attention to fighting the good fight, she might have achieved top marks. But Andromeda knew her priorities.

Fresh out of school she joined the Order of the Phoenix. It was a secret organization so her family knew nothing about it. They weren't entirely pleased with her apprenticing to become a mediwitch, but they didn't stop her. They did, however, try to sideline her into marrying a pureblood. That, of course, was something Andi just wasn't into. She didn't believe marriages should be for status of either blood or reputation. Deep down she was a hopeless romantic. And so it wasn't really any surprise when her first meeting with Ted Tonks was love at first sight. She fell head over heels for him. At first she didn't tell anyone in her family. Well, no one except Sirius, who she could trust. But that could only last so long. From there on, things moved entirely too quickly for the pair.

Too quickly and out of order. Within a few months, Andromeda found herself in a bit of a sticky situation. Pregnant. Out of wedlock. With a half-blood baby. And soon the only logical choice was to elope. Andromeda knew what it would do to her family and her position in the family. However, she knew there was really no other choice. She was a hippie, yes, but she was raised by a proper pureblooded family. A scandal like this was beyond what she was ready to handle. Eloping was the lesser of two evils. And she loved Ted. She knew immediately that she did. So despite the problems they would obviously have, Andi and Ted decided to elope. And immediately following that, Andromeda was disowned by nearly every member of her family. Sirius still loved her, of course. And if it weren't for her generous Uncle Alphard, she and Ted might not have made it through the first year. But for now they're pretty stable.

They have a two bedroom flat not far from Mungos. New Years Day of 1973 Nymphadora Eloise Tonks came screaming into the world. She was a normal child for the first few months, albeit a bit loud and wild. It was somewhere around Nymphy's third month of development that strange things started to happen. They were little things at first, and only for a moment, but gradually things accelerated. And then one day Andromeda was making faces at her baby girl and after scrunching her nose and watching Nymphy mimic it, Andromeda was shocked to notice that her daughter had completely replicated her own nose. As a studying mediwitch, she knew immediately that her daughter was not ill. So, excitedly, she owled her husband to come home so that she could excitedly tell him their daughter was a metamorphmagus. Andromeda failed to realize, however, how much harder it would be for them to raise Nymphadora and work and study to become a mediwitch all at the same time. Not to mention fight for the Order and help take care of Sirius.
